Hollywood has memorialized the beautiful scenery in several movies including "The Mask of Zorro" and "Catch-22". The beach scenes in the movie "Catch-22" were shot on what is now this village's beach. On the hillside behind the village is the dirt runway constructed for the movie.
The area around San Carlos boasts a unique coastal mountain range that runs north toward Kino Bay. The Algodones, or Cotton, Mountains receive their name from the white caps that form on the bays around San Carlos during northerly wind cycles in spring and winter; as the waves froth in the wind, the sea resembles a field of cotton. The Algodones Mountains are wonderfully rocky and full of tempting canyons with an abundance of freshwater springs. It’s the perfect place for an outdoor adventure!
